What is my view on GM foods?

Personally I think GM foods are wrong to be used, if our ansestors survived without chemicals in their food w should be able to survive. I think fresh food would be more satisfying to grow and eat. I think being naturall is great and one day chemicals will run out and we will have to get used to eating certain foods without chemicals in. Our immune system will become weaker as we're not getting natural anitbodies. So all together I think that we should not eat genetically modified foods.

What are the concerns of GM foods?

There are many concerns to GM foods.

They include;
  • Harmful to humans- the gene in some of the foods can cause harmfull allergies. They can lead to allergies with no cure.
  • Give rise to 'super weeds'- the gene in the foods that make food grow larger can transferr onto weeds, this makes the weeds sprout upwards and can ruin crops.
  • Pests- genes from GM food could be passed onto pests which can make them become resistant to the pesticides and the pesticides become useless, making thousands of jobs being lost and buisnesses running out of buissness.

What are the benefits of genetically modified foods?

There are many advantages to genetically modified food for example:
  • No pesticides or herbicides- in GM food there is not much herbicides and pesticies in gm foods as they have a strong immune system and give there own chemical off - which keeps creatures away.
  • GM foods can grow in difficult conditions- you can buy GM foods in winter because they have a anti freeze gene from cold water fish. They use this gene in plants such as potato and tobbaco. They are also able to survive in drought conditions
  • Diesaese ressitant- GM foods can servive many harmful diesases from fungi and bacteria.
  • Nutritional value- In some GM foods they have more nutrition, but this is not always the case. In 3rd world countrys, scientists have made a crop called 'golden rice' it costs the same as normal rice but have a better nutriontal value in it.
  • Increased shelf life- it can last much longer than ordinary foods

Why are genetically modified foods grown?

GM foods are grown because they are cheaper to buy. The farmers that grow them dont have to use as many herbicides of pesticides on their ordinary crops. The food produced comes quicker than ordinary food. They are cheaper to produce and buy.
GM foods may only be sold if they are not to risk health, not to mislead consumers and not to be of less nutritional value than other foods.

How is GM foods being used?

People have been breeding animals and new varieties of plants for many hundreds of years to develop or avoid certain qualities. For example different breeds of dogs. Maltipoo is a cross breed between a maltiese and a poodle.
Many horses, flowers and foods are genetically modified.

Cattle are bred according to whether they are for beef or dairy. Most of today's dairy cattle are very different from the cattle that were originally used. Over the years, dairy herd breeding has focused on increasing milk supply and on improving the quality of the milk.

What is GM food?

GM food stands for genetically modified food, it involves altering a plant, animal or microorganisms genes by inserting a different gene from a different living organism. Sometimes the term 'biotechnology' is used to describe genetically modified food. GM foods were first introduced into supermarkets in the 1990's.
